The head of office is in place! The ‘Office for Artistic Surveying’ has appointed the head of the ‘Artistic Surveying’ department. For five days, the new head of office will be surveying Milan Design Week in his own artistic approach. The aim is to gather knowledge and insights into existing structures and to find and point out relevant questions connected to the social and spatial transformation caused by the fair. By surveying the city, the artist will approach it, engage with it and enter into conversation.
The department of ‘OfAS’ is situated in the courtyard of BASE Milan. The “OfAS at Milan” Residence is supported by the World Design Capital Frankfurt RheinMain.
Kai Altheim is an artist working in photography and installation. In his works, he explores his interest in the sociocultural phenomenon of city and landscape. The starting point of his exploration is the conflict between humans and space. He uses the medium of photography to approach his surroundings, analyze them, and visually capture the relationship between places and the people who inhabit them. He considers the physical human being less as the subject of his photographs. Rather, he examines the places for objects or clues that symbolically represent human activity. In doing so, he often regards his photographs as allegories, pointing to further meanings or connections.
As part of the residency, Kai Altheim explores how he experiences the urban space during the Design Week in Milan. He engages with places, people, and boundaries. The "surveying" takes place in the sense of a visual analysis. He photographs the environment and collects objects that relate to his engagement with place, people, and boundaries in urban space. Throughout the week, a collection of images and materials will be created, and its process and development can be observed until then.
