The ‘Office for Artistic Surveying’ or in short ‘OfAS’, is a method developed by social.form as an addition to common urban planning tools.
Its goal is to approach the complex structure of ‘the city’ on emotional and subjective grounds, rather than via quantitative methods. Artists and Designers are invited to fill the position of ‘head of office’ at the ‘OfAS’ and to gather situated knowledge and insights into existing structures, neighborhoods and city quarters.
The ‘OfAS’ works visibly and tangibly on site. Existing urban space is temporarily repurposed and overwritten as the basis for the surveying activities. The aim is to create spaces for encounters and exchange in the neighborhood where the results of the search movement can be displayed, collectively discussed and developed further. The possible applications of the ‘OfAS’ are wide-ranging – whether city centre, periphery or rural area. An artistic survey is always useful when it comes to situated knowledge and emotional access to specific places and local communities.
